So the auto cannon shroud is actually part of the turret mantlet, I could also see how this would help reduce vibration in offensive engagements and may also help in thermal bending.I'd say it's minimum 1-1.5 ton over the original planned maximum weight, including the armour modifications.
Yes, even though the launcher will have limited elevation this should not matter because the missile is NLOS capable.Position is mandated by the cannon ejecting to the right (and the top of the turret used for other things).
That it'll be a twin launcher, and that it'll likely have limited elevation capability is also known.
Whether the armour covers on front and back will open like that... whether it will have some sort of add-on armour tacked on... that's under development i guess.
The position of the smoke grenade launchers was also changed a bit btw. What can't be seen in these pics is that SKWA (six-shot 76mm HE-FRAG launcher) on the back deck is still present (there have been some doubts whether it'd make it in), and SKWA has been deemed qualified for operation.
The newer version of Puma ... There appears to be a sight that is placed over the commanders direct vision pan sight. Wonder what it's for?Yes, even though the launcher will have limited elevation this should not matter because the missile is NLOS capable.
I bet, this won´t be going to happen during within the next 3 Years. At first production has to start, the Puma have to be delivered and troops have to be fitted with them. Because troops are rotating from different units to A-stan, the Bundeswehr will wait until several bataillons are fitted with Puma. The Marder 1 A 5 deployed to A-stan will have to do their job a bit longer.I wonder whether the Germans intend deploying Puma to replace the Marders recently depolyed to A-Stan in the near future?
The recent announcement by the Canadian Government regarding armoured upgrades includes a tracked AFV to compliment the new Leopards. Based on their recent experiences in A-Stan an M113 upgrade is unlikely and the two favoured options are CV90 or Puma. CV90 (according to reports) is currently favourate because it's already been combat tested in theatre by the Danes, it's also one of the two contenders for FRES recce fitted with a new 40mm turret. However that said, based on the Leopard sales success to Canada, Puma has a good chance of being selected, with or without an unmanned turret. It could be the first export success.
