Army aviation corps' pilots not PAF. PAF's chopper strength is used solely for combat SAR. For rescues like these it's army aviation which is called into action.

My fault there. That mistake in the news report was quite apparent, don't know why I got carried away. It definitely was the Army's Aviation Corps.

Some F-16s delivered by US, says Kasuri

By Our Correspondent
WASHINGTON, June 21: Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri has said that the United States has already delivered an unspecified number of F-16 fighter planes to Pakistan but declined to say how many.

“Some F-16s have already been delivered while others are being delivered,” he told a briefing in Washington.

The foreign minister said that Pakistan had requested affiliated weapon systems with the F-16s and “those are also being delivered.”

He did not specify what sort of weapon systems Pakistan had requested.

Earlier reports had said that the US does not want to deliver the systems that can be used for carrying a nuclear warhead.

But Mr Kasuri said that Pakistan would not accept “any toothless weapon” and would only take “what meets our defence need.”

In March 2005, the US agreed to sell F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, reversing a 15-year ban on the supply of these sophisticated war machines to the country.

In 1990, the first Bush administration had cancelled a deal for selling the fighter jets to Pakistan following a dispute over Islamabad’s nuclear plan although Pakistan had already paid for 28 of these planes.

Initially, the US was also reluctant to return the money but in 1998 the Clinton administration agreed to reimburse Pakistan.

While reviving the offer in March 2005, the Bush administration agreed to sell as many as 100 of these planes to Pakistan.

Islamabad wanted to buy 86 but after the October 2006 earthquake, which also dealt a serious blow to the national economy, Pakistan informed the US that it can only buy 36.

“Yes, we have reduced the numbers because of budget constraints,” said Mr Kasuri. “The Americans are still interested in selling as many as we want.”The United States, he said, was also helping Pakistan improve its capability to monitor the Pakistan-Afghan border and has agreed to sell new equipment for this purpose.

The Americans will train our troops as well, he added.

Mr Kasuri said that after his talks with Democratic leaders in Washington this week, he was “absolutely convinced that there will be no reduction in military assistance to Pakistan despite a change of command in the US Congress.”

Pakistan's Advancement in Air Weponry

Pakistani defence industry is also branching out into new areas such as air deliverable weapons such as the Durandal anti-runway bomb, Combined Effects Munition (CEM), and the Mk-15 Retarder Tail Unit (RTU) for Mk-82 bombs. The first two items are produced by Nescom and offer potential customers devastating weapons that have till recently only been available from more developed nations. The Durandal can be used against any hardened target such a runway or bunker and works by detonating after the warhead has burrowed into the target, thereby increasing the level of devastation. The CEM is a general purpose weapon that is packed with 247 bomblets for use against troops and armour. The Mk-15 RTU allows for Mk-82 bombs to be released during a high speed low-level pass by retarding the fall of the bomb, and allowing the attacking aircraft to safely depart the scene prior to detonation. In this respect it works in a similar fashion to the Durandal, though this weapon is first parachute retarded, and then boosted by a rocket motor into the target surface. Clearly these are just the beginnings for Pakistani industry’s venture into more sophisticated weaponry and there is a clear line that can be drawn from retarding simple dumb bombs and unguided munitions, to something more substantial. The next stage will undoubtedly be PGM,in which Pakistan has made Bombs H2 and H4 of 60Km and 120km respectively. They are not yet disclosed offically but some information leaked to media suggest That They are based on the T-Darter Series of South Africa.Further Update on this missile came when PAF successfully Test Fire The Missile From Mirage During Highmark Exercises in September 2005.This news was reported by the Airforce Monthly Magazine.

If it is 30 used F-16s, then the PAF must have picked up 18 used airframes from somewhere...because ACM only accounted for the 12 ex-USAF aircraft. Also, since the MLU deal covered 60 aircraft, could it mean that of the 18, 4 of them will be used as spare-parts?

Isn't the PAF getting Block 52+'s? It might be Turkey because they have some pretty old F-16's which I don't think they want anymore. Maybe some used (3,000hrs+ on the airframe) Block 50/52's. Dose Turkey have Block 40/42's?? If so maybe those.

18 units of Blk 50/52+ C/D fighters with option of 18 more. PAF required Blk-15 A/B as well, in Air-to-Air configurations. For that aquired 22+ used fighters. If the number of used fighters has not been increased to 30 than than few of the fighters must be Blk 50/52+ C/D.

Pay-Scale, Sabre or Shamim may be able to shed some light on but as for the two-seater Jf-17, YES it is planned along with a naval variant but are not expected to enter production until at least the first two batches of the 'regular' version have been received by the PAF units. Cheers!
