Nigeria to buy fighter planes from China

ABUJA (AFP) Sep 28, 2005
The Nigerian government on Wednesday approved the procurement of 12 F7NI multi-role combat aircraft and three FT7NI trainer aircraft and associated equipment from China, officials said.
The contract was awarded to China Aero Technology Import and Export Corporation at a negotiated price of 251,377,395 dollars, information minister Frank Nweke told reporters.

"This is a very clear demonstration of government commitment to ensuring that our armed forces are combat-ready at all times...and that they have the capacity and wherewithal to protect the territorial integrity of Nigeria," Nweke said.

He did not give further details.

The Nigerian military leader was in pakistan recently discussing further defence co operation. Nigerian military personnel are already trained in Pakistan. Has Nigeria purchased a version of the F7MG that Pakistan currently operates?

Really?? I got news that they bought F-8M (active) from SAC.

I think they will got FJ-17(Update) or attack L-15. While the same problem with Pakistan is whether they have enough money???

lol
Chinese planes are very cheap and are multi-purposed though I don't think they have very good night ops abilities though or BVR target aquisition systems.

Well, Nigeria's government has approved a $251 million purchase of 15 fighter and trainer aircraft from China, further strengthening ties between the two countries after a series of significant oil deals.

The 12 F-7NI multi-role combat aircraft and three FT-7NI trainer aircraft and associated equipment will be bought from China's National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corp. The F-7/J-7 is an upgraded version of the Soviet MiG-21 interceptor, with modernized avionics and weapons and a slight cranked-wing configuration.

lol F7's are no doubt decent aircrafts though they still are no match for the agile F-16.
Whats your point? Or......you dont have one? :D

F-7's are cheap for a capable mach 2 fighter!

Yes, they are pretty cheap, plus Nigeria doesnt need hightech fighters. :) whos gonna attack'em? madagascar? This F-7 purchase is also linked to a major oil deal between them and the chinese and part of China's overall strategy to increase defense links with african countries.

it seems likely that this is the same deal previously reported as J-8s but in fact related to J-7s. On the face of it, it doesn't seem like a good buy -nigeria's strategic needs are more in the air-ground arena -both maritime and in support of Nigeria's "peacekeeping" (hmmmm.....) habits. IMO.

My point is why would Nigeria need Mach 2 capable aircraft if it's purpose is defense? Nigeria is pretty small. Why don't they buy F-4's etc. or proven planes like the Panavia Tornado. I personally think it should focus on land forces as a few F-7's aren't gonna do much to a division-sized invasion force with mobile AA and SAM's.

Agreed. Su-25s seem like a more logical choice. No doubt Nigeria's chronic corruption problem played a part in the purchase choice.

Air-to-ground is more important so why not just buy some helos? maybe a few hinds for patrolling w/ AT missiles and unguided rockets.

I don't think that Nigeria needs planes like the F-16 or so. I don't know whether you still can get brandnew F-4 Phantoms or F-5E Tigers but I guess the latest J-7 version is good enough for them. The Panavia Tornado? Eh...it is still not a cheap plane!

No they dont need aircraft like F-16 nor U.S will sell them. Anyways they dont make new F-4s & F-5s & since U.S is not willing to sell them fighters, Russians are too expensive to buy & maintain the next best choice available at this moment is J-7/F-7 from China & China is also a willing seller.

But I think it would have been better if they purchase 2nd hand stuff. They can also get pretty good PAF & PLAAF 2nd hand J-7/F-7 versions starting 2006-7 when JF-17 rolls out.

well wait and wait
until jf17 is there and get f7 at a more cheaper price
if then the PAF sells the F7 PG then buy them
as the jf17 way too expensive or no need for the NAF
