New ship(s) for Irish Naval Service???

I know that Helo operations have been discussed elsewhere in this thread, but is it a "requirement" for the Irish Navy to have a Hanger on the aft end of the ship, or just the need to be able to support / refuel / re-arm a helo ?

No Doubt the Brunei OPV's could fulfill the majority of the roles discussed here, but the crux of the answer to this question is....


Would they be able to afford them ??

No, the government is thinking in terms of 50-60 million Euros for the OPVs and 90-100 million Euros for the EPVs. 200 million Euros per F-2000 is out of the question. There is no requirement for a helo deck, much less a hangar for the OPVs, and only a helo deck for the EPVs, more useful as a vehicle deck rather than a helo deck. As I recall, the Irish government will order 2 OPVs with an option for 1 or 2 before the end of they year 08. Next year they will order one EPV with an option for 1, the total being 3 ships with an option for 2-3 more ships later. Ireland should end up with 7-8 ships, including the 2 Roisins eventually. The EPVs will not be corvettes, just slightly larger OPVs with a vehicle/helo deck aft. The idea is to downsize on ship types, using mostly the same sensors, weapons, and if possible engine arrangements.

I suppose they could buy the River's off VT if the RN decided they wanted an OPV with a hanger.
