NATO operations in Afghanistan

As a matter of fact the Netherlands has lost 2 Chinooks, an Apache helicopter and an F-16 (pilot was killed) in Afghanistan since jan 2005. All accidents though, at least that is what the MOD has claimed. But a few of the other Apaches were damaged by small arms when they were checked after their missions. So they aren't really that fragile unless they get hit in a critical spot.

And the difference is that NATO is fighting an insurgency while the Russians were fighting a large resistance force that was trained and equipped by Pakistan and the US.

You got it.
:)

The US is not even able to secure its border to Mexico or Israel its border to the palestinian zones, how should it be done there...
Able to secure the border and willing to secure the border are two very different things.

Israel is defenitely willing to do it but is not able to secure its borders.

How should it work in such an environment like in the mountains of the A-stan-Pakistan borderland?

I do not doubt that there are elements in Pakistan which are not that eager about closing this border but as said before sending 80.000 troops of which month by month soldiers get killed is not nothing.
