Myanmar Gearing Up?

I wasn't able to find any sources indicating that Sokol got new MiG-29K orders. I also wasn't able to find any Russian sources confirming the mode type. Your source may simply be a case of presumptuous translation. I strongly suspect that an order that would give Sokol additional production, would receive at least some publicity. Also 572 mil USD is about 28mil per plane. Sounds more like second hand SMT upgrades, then new MiG-29Ks.
I agree a new build would have been worth much more.

Myanmar are buying those Mi-24s for counter insurgency and close air support. Simple as that. Along with K-8s they will give better support to the troops.

They got over 30 Mig-29s but they are for air defence only so its logical to go for Hinds. The newly delivered ones are Mig-29 SMT models.

Tanks - over 100 T-72s (T-72S to be precise) and 1000 BTR-3Us (to assemble in Myanmar). Yes. There are some T-55s but they are good for training. They also got 240mm MRLS for N. Korea.

Navy - Building more missile frigates and missile corvettes.

Myanmar needs to upgrade its armed forces and they are doing that just now. Myanmar get up to 6 billion dollars a year from oil and gas so now is the time. No need to worry for other nations but I am sure the neigbours will think twice before starting something with Myanmar now. No repeats of incidents like in 1991 because Myanmar are more than ready this time around.

The BTR-3Us deal was a bust according to the best info I got. Several (iirc 10) were delivered, and then payments fell through and the whole thing went up in flames. Do you have a source proving that the BTR-3Us are still being delivered?

Hi. I don't have the exact numbers but they definitely got more than 10 from what I have seen from Myanmar military adverts (you still might find some of them on youtube as I did).

I read the same reports about payment issues but I can't see that to be a problem as soon after Myanmar made large sums of money from oil and gas sales.

Could you provide a link to a Myanmar military video with more then 10 BTR-3U clearly visible? News sources would be excellent also.

Very very old advert from you tube. Myanmar had Mig-29s, T-72S and more frigates since then.

A couple of BTR-3Us moving pass..

I can't find the video I was referring to but I found the above on youtube and google videos. The video I was talking about was an intro part of a Burmese military movie.

I also read that Myanmar bought a number of SH-1 SP Howitzers this year which will give the army better mobile strike force.

Those do appear to be BTR-3s. And the image looks like something out of a passerby's video of real troops, rather then parade shots. Any estimates on how many BTR-3s are operational right now?

I don't know the answer. I read on the internet that there were plans to create 5 APC divisions but I don't know if they came to light.
