I don't think there are any pictures of MIG 1.42 in flight. I haven't seen any on the net. :?
I do, I've got some footage in my archives back home. It would take me a while to find it though as I'm in the middle of relocating for work. It's a bit grainy (originally a VHS copy I think)

It did less than 50 flying hrs before it was pulled from testing.

When I eventually get around to it I can. At the moment part of my stuff is on a truck driving across australia, and I'm about to go to germany. so I won't see it for a while. ;) But I will have a look when I get back. Someone might have to remind me though.

The thing was cancelled due to lack of funds and the choosing of Suhoi as the lead research insititute for the 5th Generation AC. Initially Russian government offered the AC to China and India in hopes of saving the project but none of them were interested. India went for the PAK FA instead and China decide to design its own J-XX. But there were rumors of plasma stealth tech on this jet, however this cannot be confirmed.

Personally I think the plasma stealth technology is a bit overdone.
All the jets that you see that are supposed to have it invariably have painted bodies or conformal RAM coatings on them, eg it's a bit hard for any electronic induced phenomena to be induced on those surfaces.

The B2 bomber is also supposed to use a variation of plasma tech (which in effect turns it into one big flying electrostat). From my (admittedly) limited knowledge of electrical physics, I can't see it working on the B2 or the "phantom" russian aircraft.

why would anyone bother. it's a technology demonstrator that underperformed on tests. the very reason why sukhoi was blessed by the govt to undertake current combat aircraft production was to stop what the russians saw as unncessary development.

Mikoyan will have to fund it itself, it cannot seek outside investors without govt approval, and as such it will be seen as a distraction to Irkut, which is why the govt is moving towards one aircraft manufacturer. (thats why Irkut has floated and has absorbed old stalwarts like Yakovlev)

It's a gen 4 aircraft that has been rapidly been superceded in a few areas. To get the test bed revitalised will be singularly expensive. I can't see the Russ govt being too happy about this, especially when giving orders to Sukhoi was a very overt statement to Mikoyan about what was going to be the "new world order" for the russ aviation industry.

as of now they have some funds available they had recently sold some migs to an african country and they have a few more customers in line.their cheif was hopefull of india placing an order for 30 mig 29k's .and are expecting to have a favourable result in the ongoing competition to supply india with an mrca or atleast upgrade the iaf mig29's to mig29 ovt standard .i too feel that it is pretty optimistic.

if they can implement a V shaped more stealthier Inlet and keep minimal Weaponry like AtoA and BVR and keep them in side the AC some how and keep the Ac Clean. then it would be a potent and a very dangerous AC in air.

so its not currently a 5th generation fighter then
It's whats referred to in industry circles as an "orphaned unit". It's going nowhere for a very very long time unless they get hit with a huge sum of money. And they won't get it from the Russian Govt, and they haven't the resources to fund it off second hand Mig29 sales and service.

The Russ govt has already forced them to stop development.

so if the reports are true and India decides to join in the R&D and pay up, then we might see this Project taking a 5th gen shape.

Possibly, but it's not a 5th gen aircraft, even with investment.
