Taking out an aircraft Carrier would be a massive political win for someone opposed to the US to achieve, but it will never be "easy" to achieve. The support ships of the Carrier, the Arleigh Burkes and Ticonderoga's etc are the most advanced "fighting ships" in the world, with the most powerful naval air defence systems yet devised, In addition to this, each Carrier's own airwing is more powerful than most air forces around the world. Managing to sink one (which has never happened in the modern age) will not be easy in the forseeable future, even for a Nuclear armed foe. Plus using a nuclear weapon to sink one US carrier would be the height of foolishness. The US would respond in kind, but not against the Chinese Navy...

the normal U.S carrier group is made up of 2 Ticonderoga cruiser and 3 Arleigh Burkes and 4-5 frigates with 3 supply ships, the group has enough SAMs to counter a massive missile strike with about 400 missiles. with the current capability of PLAN, it's doubtful whether it can launch such a massive attack.

im juz wondering if stealthy SSM flying near sea level would be successful in attacking the carrier, since the missile's low RCS and low altitude would give the battlegroup very little time to respond.(rumor has it that ruskies are making a stealthy supersonic missile)

If a Strike Group was on a war footing with approp systems in play, the unassisted or autonomous warning zone is almost 1000k's
