The Viraat has out lived its life it has been in two major refits in the last 4 years. The best bet is the new ADS and the Keiv class Gorshkov. Together these two ship will have about 40 jets on board when face with a war like scenario. But then both these ships would be deployed only at the end of this decade...............

I think Navy needs More ASW ships and Mine hunters

Considering the capability of PN AND PLAN subs we need to have atleast 15 more ASW corvettes armed with torpedo's,Depth charges and ASW rocket launchers.

And more number of Amphibious assault ships,Landing ships,Underway replenishment ships, oilers etc.

And I read the our pondicherry class minesweepers are not having minehunting capability.

What exactly is Minehunting capability? :help

At this point of time India requires minmum 3 fleet headed by aircraft carriers and independent submaries.
I wouldnt say that. It depend on what your objectives are right? And whats the Aircraft carrier like. If its something like a Nimitz ull need just one and if u want to go against gwadar AND karachi ull need just one of the gorshkov class and maybe a refitted Viraat.
In actual fact, if the fleet is to be used properly, then Sq No 15 is absolutely correct.

In Indias case it means that the disposition should be as follows:

1 x Fleet based in the east
1 x Fleet based in the west
1 Carrier tasked as a maintainence asset to rotate with the two strike force capital ships.

3 is usually considered the minimum for a larger navy or a navy that has large oceanic areas to patrol.

In Indias case she should/could actually look at 5 carriers. 1 at each of the Fleet levels and 1 as a rotating maint scheduler. The 5th would be on demand and have greater wear and tear as such - and in an ideal world a 6th would have to be factored in if split fleet maint was to be kept at a minimum.

Peace time = 3 vessels of type,
Wartime = 5-6 vessels of type.

But 5-6 is very tough to maintain cosidering the budget.
I think USN is the only navy which maintains more than 5 aircraft carriers.
3 vessels would be better by 2020.
