MiG-21s will fly till 2016: IAF

One of world’s most-built jet, MiG-21 was born in mid-50s out of Russia’s post-World war II ambitions in a divided world. The small, agile, stylish fighter soon crowded skies of Europe, Africa, Asia and Central America. In 1963 the first batch of MiG-21s entered Indian Air Force, as part of a strategy to take on Pakistan’s Starfighters from the United States and to meet the challenges from China. Till date some 13,000 of them have built in Russia and in many countries like India under licence, and in countries like China without it.
Over the past few years, the MiG-21 has been in the news for crashes rather than its combat ability. Even though India has been looking for a replacement, the IAF reiterated that the aircraft will continue to fly with the force till at least 2016.
In 1965 war with Pakistan, the MiG-21 played no significant role. After the war the IAF began inducting a larger number of MiG-21s making it its backbone. And by 1967, India began assembling and later manufacturing them, giving rise to a larger number of military industrial units across India.
