How good is the Su-35?

the Su-35 is in service (11 of them according to www.warfare.ru)
Its not. Not beyond demonstrator and testing status. There are no Su-35 in active russian air force units and the ones that were produced, fly and stand around on various air shows in order to get some exports done.
The Russians are using a separate upgrade programm for their own fighter inventory, designation Su-27SM (in comparison to Su-27M/Su-35). Suchoi received a 3-year-contract in order to modernise 24 units, six were delivered in 2006. Most of the money and effort seems to go to the new fighter-program (PAKFA), with deadlines that are ambititous to say the least.

It certainly isn't as good as the propoganda video says it is. Can any one tell me what's wrong with this video? It is good for a laugh... :eek:nfloorl:

Here's what can be red in Flygplan kort (Swedish Armed Forces pocket-sized military aircraft recognition guide).

Su-35/Su-37 is a development from the Su-27. Su-35 flew for the first time 1988 under the disignition Su-27M. The aircraft has been upgraded with canards, refueling probe, modified engines, modified analoge electric flight control system and new electronic presentation. The Su-35 was meant to replace the Su-27 but by economic reasons and the time this project has taken it will probebly not enter Russian air force service. 10 prototypes/batch 1 aircraft has been made.
One of the prototypes has been modified to Su-37, which also have a analoge electric flight control system. Unlike the Su-35 the Su-37 has vectorized thrust. Both aircraft are instabil. The Su-37 project will serve as a technology test plane.

It is indeed regrettable, that Suchoi is using jets like Su-37 or Su-35 to show off at air shows with fancy flight manouvers like the Cobra, that in todays technological and operational environment have little or no combat value. Especially people with no further knowledge about air combat or technical details form their opinion based on such nonsense and then we see computer animations by the manufacturer that push these delusional impressions even further.

Unfortunately this holds true for other manufacturers as well, see the Eurofighter video. Not as extreme as the Suchoi ad, but certainly questionable.

Apparently Sukhoi thinks the Typhoon isn't going to do anything if shot at. They also think an AB will let them fire ASMs without retaliating. They think everything is a target that can't fight back long before they do.
