Canadian Navy Spending Spree

Quite.

Peru recently bought two Newports, but that was a bit of a surprise. The Peruvians either have lower standards than Chile, or a very tight procurement budget.

Chile has just retired one earlier than scheduled as no longer safe to operate & beyond economic repair, & brought forward the purchase of a replacement - which is the French LPD Foudre, rather than another Newport. BTW, I think the one the Chileans refused was the last one still in USN hands.

I'am happy with the Canadian built ship, for many reasons. Not sure who is designing them tho.
The government has decided to fund building new ships, but they haven't decided on exactly which ship's design... The government still has to go through the tender process...

The RN & RCN would be foolish not to cooperate on this order, there must be commonality between the two, particularly those slated as AsW platforms. Even if it meant the RN making changes to suit Canadian requirements. Havung a common hull of potentially 25+ ships to meet both T26 & the CSC requirement would save a load of cash.
Per this article, Canada won't buy the type 26 design:

CTV News - Ottawa won't be working with U.K. on building warships

There are fears, logical or not, that the type 26 project will turn into a political mess like the F35's.

The shipbuilding contracts have proven very popular to date, they provide long term certainty to the Canadian shipbuilding industry, and unlike the very unpopular decision to acquire the F35's with no competitive tender, 3 shipyards put up a fight to build these ships, with Quebec for once not winning (proving politically neutral decision).
