This 054A class's main focus point is the VLS system, and the HQ16. Other stuff are not that significant. It's been long anticipated in china, because it's supposed to be China's first general purpose hot VLS system. And HQ16 is the first type of missile to be interfaced and deployed with it. Future PLAN DDG and FFG projects need to see how 054A's VLS system goes.

Well HQ-7 is a perfect clone of Crotale Naval EDIR of Thomson-CSF, 13km, Mach 2.4, warhead 14kg. It was modern in the '80s and '90s, but by now it's getting obsolescent vs ESSM, Aster-15, though it can be comparable to Russia's Klinok SA-N-9, range 12km, Mach 2, warhead 15kg. Main issue is semi-actie radar homing depending on illuminators.tphuang said:

looks like it could be ready to sail later this year. Even in the last 2 weeks, it has changed quite a bit.
Also, we've seen from a webpage that indicates HP is currently building 2 054As. Assuming that HD shipyard is getting the same orders, it would reason that 4 054A are getting built in unison. That's a surprisingly high amount of orders.

Yes, France is among few other Euro countries who leak mil tech to china, e.g. Italy, Germany, UK and some from Sweden, Swiss and Spain. That's it.
As of HQ16, actually China got more tech help from Russia at detail level. France's understanding of future ASM threat was the interest point for China. That's why it's interesting what will show up.

That's just a plastic sheet to cover something. New paint? I don't know, seems that only this shipyard does this. You can see these sheets on the first 054A as well.
