Australian Defense Forces Recruiting Foreign Military Personnel

Combat Medic

Right now I'm a combat medic in the US Army. I'm a sergeant and have been in 6 years now. I heard mention of this from an officer in my unit and it does sound interesting I'm just wondering how much my rank would drop, because they want leaders there and if I was no longer in a leadership position, it wouldn't be worth their time. Also, about the training and deployments that I have had, along with the civilian education that I've earned, does that transfer over with me? I have always wanted to go to Australia and find the country quite fascinating, this seems like it might be a good opportunity but what about my family? I have a husband and soon to be 3 children. Is there a limit or limiting factors when it comes to that as well?

JackQ, I work with guy who was a medic in the UK, he tanferred to Aust ÀRMYY as a a junior NCO, a reduction in rank for him, but pay and condition were higher than what he earned in the Britih army at a higher rank, he also progressed quite quickly through our rank structure. He WA frustrated by the way we do things, over all he rated our army highly, but remember we are a small army, and don't have the logistics of the UK or US.

Normally defence drops you in one rank until they are satisfied that your suitable for promotion, which is generally a shorter timeframe then others depending on your training, knowledge and experience.

You'll find ADF pay scale to any US Military is vastly different as we have multiple perks on top of salary, for medics your looking towards 7 or 8 on the pay scale.
Salary + Service allowance($12,000p.a) + courses/knowledge (depending on corp) field allowance + operational deployments (for afghanistan this is about $250 a day, plus your full pay is tax free while in the region)
Also our deployments tend to last 6-9 months, and very rarely extend 12months. Im saying this as medics are considered a priority for deployment with current tempo.

Right now ADF is targetting foreign allied personnel with skills and trades that we are lacking. Best way to find out if its possible is get in touch with Defence recruiting.

Thanks very much for that information. The recruitment page is helpful and I think that it answered a lot of the questions that I had. I would really love to serve in the Australian Army and have the opportunity to become a citizen there. That just blows my mind! I have less than 2 years left in the US Army and I'm really looking forward to getting out. It was always too big for me, where people get over looked too easily and when half the country hates you, the country that you're defending (or at least told that you are), you start to question if you're doing the right thing.

Lateral Transfer to ADF

Firstly thank you to everyone commenting wrt the lateral transfer, you have enlightened me tremendously.

I am an Int Off at a Spec Force Regt in the South African National Defence Force for the past 6 yrs, and a member of the SANDF for 15 yrs.

I've read up alot on different blogs wrt the lateral transfer system, but most are not updated recently.

I submitted my EOI on the ADF recruitment site end of Feb 2013. I though have a couple of questions, if anyone could be helpful?

1. Is the preocess still between a year or two since the first contact until reporting at your new unit?

2. Will it fasten the process if I am willing to visit Australia on own cost to complete some of the documents there as well as attend the interview?

3. Assuming that there is not many transfer requests from SA, if an Officer would travel just for one application?

4. Am I aiming too high to think that I am worthy to even be concidered for lateral transfer?

My wife and I are looking so foward to relocate to Aus and every day waiting for a reply feels like a week.

Lateral Transfer

Also Is it true that all the interviews are done in England? Being that I am in Canada, it can be costly to fly over there for an interview. Is there any way for Canadians to do the interviews here or do it via phone. Just a thought

Hi all !

i'm writing about recruitment. I'm italian my name is Paolo, i'm 26 and i'm a Italian nurse (graduate with Rome University "La Sapienza").
Can you help me? How can I join to ADF (prefer army or air force) as nurse?
I served my country from 2005 to 2006 (VFP1 = volunteer one year in IT Army). After military leave I entered university in 2008 and in 2012 i graduate in nursing.

ADF nurses are officer (Royal Military College)...as you well know in Italy defense nurses have university degree but they can't attending the Italian Medicin Academy, we are the only NATO country without nurses officer.
Sorry for my bad english and thanks for help me

Best regards, Paolo

Hi Paolo,

Welcome to the website. Your best bet is to make contact with ADF recruiters at:

Find jobs in the Navy, Army and Air Force - Defence Jobs Australia

They also have a section for international recruitment with further information available here:

Recruitment Centre - Defence Jobs Australia

Best of luck!

(PS, your english is far better than most of our Italian, so don't worry about it! Nessun problema compagno!)

It's kind of a 'catch 22' situation. You won't know if your service will be approved until you apply and your records and qualifications are vetted.

They won't give you a definitive answer without a full and supported application.

I doubt many Australiqn civilian employers in your field would these days either...

Best of luck.

AD.

Also being that it is the new electronic age, is it at all possible to do the interview via a video conference, as not everybody can make it to London or Australia for the interviews.

Thanks

Wow...with exchange rates being what they are, you guys pay significantly better than the USN...though I guess increased cost of living would offset it.

With QOL being probably the top reason USN personnel leave early, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a long line of applicants trying to transfer.

The problem with transferring to the RAN is you need to serve under RAN officers, some are very good but as I have recently discovered many leave a lot to be desired, both in leadership and more of a concern in intellectual capacity. There are many who were passed over for promotion and all I can say is wise choice.

The US is not at all immune to that problem. The RAN and RN officers I've worked with were all very proficient in seamanship and tactics...the greater specialization is pretty regularly brought up by some in the USN as a model to go back to.

Though I'm surprised you guys means test pensions. That would make heads explode on this side of the world.

I see by the lack of responses that there is no news on this front. Funny how other countries can do interviews via video confrence and make it work. Would be nice to know the reason why they can hold interviews that way. Just a thought.
