Not old enough to remember Curtin and Menzies old mate. Whitlam is the 1st PM I can remember.
I must be well older. Remember Menzies vaguely, Holt drowning, Black Jack McEwen as the Nationals only PM, John Gorton, and Billy Big Ears (and Sonya's legs!) Voted for a Whitlam Government twice then against them. For reasons unrelated to Defence aside from questionable financial arrangements with very dodgy foreigners.

Making me feel ancient!

Cant we just have some bipartisan support that both parties are equally as stupid as the other?? ;) In all seriousness you get good and bad on both sides, and those good and bad can and have made stupid or smart decisions depending on the politics of the day. Its not all black and white, quite simply it is a very bloody grey area.

It's estimated worth is now > $300 million, so it's probably the best investment of $1.3 million dollars the federal government ever made. Art market prices for 'classic' works is crazy.

I have an earlier memory of the flyover for Chuchill,s funeral , would it be fair to suggest that many cabinet decisions are still sealed for some years

A few young bucks in here :p

I remember JFK being assassinated, then his brother Bobby. Don't remember Churchill falling off his perch. Think it was Gorton who went for a swim and never returned. Remember that.

Anyway time to get back on topic.

You should lay off the Kiwi plonk. It's affecting your memory. Or sense of humour

Folks - whilst selection of the AH64E and UH60M for Army Aviation have been announced, when are we likely to see contract signature? Are we likely to see any movement before we enter caretaker mode in the future months? If not, are we to assume back to the drawing board under a new Government?

I am not sure how far advanced the projects are, but since the DCSA notifications to Congress have been published, what generally happens next is that the pricing, terms, etc., will be negotiated by the US Army on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia with the vendors. That takes time and once agreement is reached it moves thought various approval processes before the first aircraft are handed over.

Given my pessimism, I would think limited movement towards contract during the current Government.

Literally a formality. They'll be in service as per the dates in the media releases I suspect.

The ADF want the AH64E and UH60M .
Which ever party is in power will want to support this purchase.
The US government will want to support this acquisition by a close Allie.
The manufacturers of the aircraft will be happy for the sale.
The respective aircraft are well proven products.

Suggest it will all go to plan relatively quickly.

Thoughts on this? I would've thought that there wasn't an immediate need to replace the exiting Abrams fleet.
There is. M1A1 our current standard, is rapidly approaching obsolescence as it has been out of production for over 30 years.

Additionally the M1A1 fleet is too small to meet our own limited needs and this order is about a lot more than just gun tanks…

The current fleet of 59 tanks are obsolete, or near enough to being obsolete.

This project is not just an upgrade of the existing fleet, but also a much needed expansion, plus additional types of heavy armour vehicles too.
