Yes right. Let's talk about the overall size of the SSN fleet the USN is targeting. I've read that the max number is 30 Virginias and the 3 Sea Wolf. That's quite a reduction vs the current 50-55. The article I read is credible according to you ?

cheers
I can’t believe that USN would shrink SSN fleet to only 33 subs… I remember article from February this year that stated 46 SSN as minimum if USN won’t to keep current capabilities…

The USN could indeed shrink to 33 SSNs plus fourr SSGNs..

This scenario would provide one SSN/SSBN for each of the of the anticipated Strike Groups.

But provide no SSNs for the other tasks now assigned instead relying on other assets..

Of course the USN is planning on reducing the # of Carrier Strike Groups and the Expeditionary Strike Groups.

Plus not using the SSGN's independently.

Which would free up five to nine SSNs for other tasks.

Not great but....

Rick orry to go off topic a bit but I believe you have a warship database is it publically available or private?
It is published here and also there is a locked thread in navy forum by Rick which has the same and/or updated information.

.... this is the world we live in with continual defense spending going from procurment to operations in the "War on Terror" and the ever increasing cost of US warships. While the technology and weapons systems are impressive the price tag is as well. Designers have forgotten the art of affordability in the short-term. Most on the Hill don't understand life-cycle cost savings and elect to determine the value of a platform based on initial cost then thy whine when projections don't meet their production cuts. They don't realize that when you cut down production you increase cost of each individual platform. With all these factors and the Secretary of Defense not coming to a decision on fleet size the USN lags behind PLAN in vessle construction. While the US was supposed to maintain 315 or 375 current procurement will have the USN running less than 200 ships by 2020.

Yep, the Asian fleets are competing fiercely in a new arms race, while the US and Europe aren't investing enough... history always repeats itself unfortunately !! Let's hope quality will always beat quantity !!

cheers nonetheless

Does anyone have any idea as to the SSN/SSBN capabilities of the chinese navy in regard to the ongoing tension regarding N.korea and the potential for US SSN's to encounter these vessels if a "situation" was to escalate in the reigon..Sorry I know its a little off topic, but if someone could humour me that'd be wicked!!

Rumor has it that the 401 and 406 were so loud that it would throw off the migration patterns of whale pods. I guess it either scared them or damaged their accoustic senses.

Heh, I guess they could always herd the poor little whales into a suicide attack on a US SSN - the resulting whale debris would keep the Japanese whaling community happy..I'm sure Greenpeace would get over it..eventually.

Yep and the last time a Han class SSN approached Okinawa it was easily heard by a Japanese ASW escort destroyer and tracked for several hours.
The SSN could have been sunk anytime with no effort.
Besides, the Japanese have 60+ P-3C Orion ASW patrol aircrafts who come in very handy for these purposes ;)

Worst of all is the current & only Chinese SSBN of the Xia class. Even supposing it is operational after all, it would better remain in its harbor:rolleyes:

All of this will change the day the new SSNs (Victor III hull design, though probably Akula equipment) become operational. Still some time though before then...

cheers
