Hello,
Im from Ireland, 20 years old and currently they are not recruitung for any branch of the military. I have applied for the British army but failed my medical. Thankfully my medical problem has now been solved, so I can re-apply for the british army again. I was just wondering if there are any other armys an Irish citizen can apply for other than the british army? or is that my only option?

Yes Ireland does have their own army but due to the recession they have halted recruitment in every branch of military, but they do hold competitions on a yearly basis for introduction as a cadet, I do not meet the education standards to apply for this. I would love to join the Irish army but cannot due to them not recruiting.

they teach you french... it is a tough life and the french can now afford to be picky with who gets to live it. Its hard to get into these days. I wouldn't wouldn't encourage they train hard(very hard) and they control your life in every way, oh and they take your passport the day you turn up.

If you are an Australian resident you can join the Australian army. So move here get residency and join but you will more like get into a non combat related role. Due to high retention rates...

You dont need to be a citizen all you have to do is move here.... If you were trying to get into a military of another country it is a costly and drawn out process.

It’s much harder to get the points for permanent residency in Australia than it is to join the British Army.

You best option other than the British Army is the American forces. I don't know the processes but they seem full of soldiers and sailors from all sorts of countries (not just Latin America) serving so as to become US Citizens.

Have you considered joining the LDF ( The weekend army ) this may increase your chances of being recruited into one the Irish forces.

When I was sixteen I joined the Royal Navy from Ireland and never regretted it. I wish you the best of luck in what ever you decide to do.

Sadly the irish army arent recuruiting for the reserves or any branch and wont be for quite some time. I would have loved to join the reserves but cannot :(

I would also like to join american army but you have to have an american passport or greencard to do so :(

Really any army will do that will take me :) looks like its just the brits or FFL for me then! unless anyone else has any ideas?

As I understand it, joining the US military is one way of getting a "green card" and eventually citizenship.

You get a "Green card" when you enlist and citizenship after 5? years service.

As EU citizen some European countries might take you. Afaik Belgium and some other countries (Switzerland?) are accepting EU citizens on a regular basis in their armed forces.

This is a common misconception.

Non-US Citizens can join the US Army (and many do), however you must already be a Permanent Legal Resident (have a Green Card) to join. Certain career fields (those that required security clearences) are restricted to US Citizens only. Non-US Citizens serving in the US Armed Forces do get accelerated Citizenship however.

I'd have thought anyone would take you; my manager wanted to join the USN, and was told all he had to do was go to the US and enlist there.
Mind you, that was back in the 60's!;)

Does anyone else have any other recommendations that don't involve getting residency or citizenship before I apply for the British Army again?

It's got to be in your heart to join ANY armed service, and by the way you appear to be checking for alternatives it doesn't seem like you have it.

You join the countries armed forces which you are willing to die for, you join the countries armed forces which you love. You DON'T plan join the British Army and if - should someone offer another easy option - drop it and move onto that one.

If I was willing to die for the US would do, it would be my sole option and no other country, i'd go through hell or high water to join their forces, not just sit back and think 'well, I guess it's too long-winded so i'm not going to bother'.

Sorry if i sound hostile, it's just I get a bit offended when people appear to have a "well, looks like i'm going to have to join the British Army then", actually, any nations armed forces.

Quite agree with the above. ANY country would want people to join for the right reason and not just because its the easy option. My son in law is Aussie and is currently serving in the Grenadiers; he could've joined the Australian Army, but decided on the British army, partly to stay with my daughter, partly to further his career, but, (from conversations we've had), mainly, (I think), to serve his sovereign; being something of as Republican myself, I'm not to sure of this!
BUT, I couldn't be prouder of him if her were my own son!:D
