WASHINGTON: The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Iraq of various vehicles, small arms ammunition, explosives, and communications equipment as well as associated equipment and services.
The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $2.257 billion.
The Government of Iraq has requested a possible sale of the following:
MDE (Major Defense Equipment-Ed.) includes:
– 980 M1151 High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) and

– standard and non-standard vehicle spare and repair parts, maintenance, support equipment, publications and documentation; personnel training and training equipment;
– Quality Assurance Team support services, U.S. Government and contractor engineering and logistics support services, preparation of aircraft for shipment, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $2.257 billion.
This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country. This proposed sale directly supports the Iraqi government and serves the interests of the Iraqi people and the U.S.
The proposed sale of ammunition for small arms, vehicles, grenades, pyrotechnics, munitions, communication equipment, clothing and individual equipment, upgrade and refurbishment of 32 UH-I HUEY helicopters to UH-II configuration, and support will enable the Iraqi Army to expand their force structure by 25 battalions and a Brigade headquarters.
This expansion will enable Iraq to equip new forces to assume the missions currently accomplished by U.S. and coalition forces and to sustain themselves in their efforts to bring stability to the country.
The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not affect the basic military balance in the region.
The contractors are unknown at this time. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government and contractor representatives to Iraq.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
