AFP, ISLAMABAD: The Chief of US Central Command General John Abizaid has arrived in Pakistan on an official visit that coincides with a massive military operation against hundreds of Al-Qaeda-linked militants near the Afghanistan border, the military said Monday.
“He (Abizaid) is visiting Pakistan,” Pakistan military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan told AFP.
Asked if Abizaid's visit was linked to the current operation against Al-Qaeda hideouts in the rugged South Waziristan tribal belt, Sultan said, “The visit has nothing to do with the operation.”
“It is already a scheduled visit.”
Sultan did not comment on the US general's engagements, saying that details of Abizaid's meetings with senior Pakistani officials would be given later.
