AFP, ANKARA: Two pilots were killed when a Turkish fighter jet crashed in the west of the country on Monday because of a technical failure, the Turkish army said.
The aircraft, which was on a training flight, had taken off from an airbase in the western province of Eskiseher and crashed near the town of Selendi, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) to the southwest, the chief of staff said in a statement.
“The two pilots aboard the aircraft were killed in the accident,” it added.
Earlier, the governor of Manisa province, where Selendi is located, told the Anatolia news agency that human remains had been spotted at the crash site.
“Paramilitary troops are carrying out investigations at the crash scene… The teams have seen body parts,” Governor Orhan Isin told the agency.
Anatolia quoted eyewitnesses as saying the aircraft slammed into a hillside.
