GIAT Industries, VERSAILLES, France: The Giat Industries / TDA -Thales consortium successfully completed the first closed loop firings of the Spacido system at the Bourges ETBS test center on June 15th 2006.
The firings, at a range of 19 km, demonstrated the various elements and performances of the system: localisation of the projectile, calculation, communication of the correction order to the fuze, deployment and efficiency of the trajectory correcting system integrated in the fuze.
These tests, performed in accordance with the product development time schedule, are a key milestone that has been reached for the project. This success allows to propose a system which meets the operational requirements of modern artillery, precision firings at low cost.
Spacido is a precision improvement system for artillery (105 mm, 155mm) that is currently under development and funded by the French MOD. This up-to-date system, which is autonomous and GPS-independent, allows a precision improvement (dispersion in range divided by 4) of artillery firings that leads to a considerable reduction of costs and collateral damages through performance enhancement.
