Swedish Defence, The Armed Forces yesterday requested the Government's approval to redistribute SEK 200 million from the materiel and installations allocation, and SEK 100 million from the research and development allocation, to the sum allocated for unit operations. The request was communicated verbally to the Ministry of Defence towards the end of last year.
Yesterday’s request supplements the earlier request for approval to transfer SEK 550 million from the materiel and installations allocation to the sum allocated for unit operations. This means that the Armed Forces are requesting that a total of SEK 850 million be redistributed for the benefit of unit operations.
This is due to the overall financial situation, and the primary reason why the amount to be transferred is larger than that originally requested is that the savings expected to be made in unit operations in 2007 could not be realised.
In order to continue to operate within budget, both savings and the redistribution of funding are necessary.
Armed Forces spending will not exceed the budgetary framework of SEK 37.7 billion for 2008 and no additional money is being requested. But political approval is being sought for the redistribution of funds within the overall budgetary allocation.
