GENEVA: The Swiss government is considering halting arms sales to Pakistan because of the ongoing political tension there, the Swissinfo website reported Tuesday.
The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco), which is responsible for arms exports, could make a decision Wednesday, according to the report.
Some left-wing political figures have repeatedly demanded the Swiss government change its decision to authorize a Swiss firm to sell to the Pakistani army 21 anti-aircraft defense missiles worth some 120 million U.S. dollars.
Swiss law bans the sale of war material to crisis regions.
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has come under international pressure for his decision to impose emergency rule on Nov. 3.
Musharraf said Sunday in Islamabad that general elections for the national assembly and the provincial assemblies would be held simultaneously before Jan. 9.
However, Musharraf refused to say when he would lift the state of emergency.
