Voice of America News, The U.S. Army says the suicide rate among soldiers last year was the highest since the 1990s.
The Army says 83 soldiers on active duty killed themselves in 2005, a rate of nearly 13 per 100,000. Of those solders, 25 had been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.
In 2004, 67 active-duty soldiers committed suicide, a rate of 11 soldiers per 100,000. Those suicides included 14 who had served in Iraq or Afghanistan.
A total of 76 soldiers died by their own hand in 2003. Nearly a third of those served in one of the two war zones.
An Army spokesman says it has increased its numbers of mental health experts, to help soldiers deal with combat stress, financial problems, and failed relationships.
