AFP, Colombo: Sri Lanka will send 800 soldiers to Haiti as part of its continued commitment to the UN peacekeeping efforts there, a military spokesman said today.
The contingent will replace the first one that is completing its six months term, said Brigadier Daya Ratnayake. The September deployment was Sri Lanka's first major UN peacekeeping assignment.
Sri Lanka lost two of its soldiers in March when UN troops tried to take control of a police station from gunmen in Haiti. Two soldiers were also wounded in the incident.
