US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, WASHINGTON: The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Spain of SM-2 Block IIIB STANDARD missiles as well as associated equipment and services.
The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $63 million.
The Government of Spain has requested a possible sale of 36 SM-2 Block IIIB STANDARD missiles (36 tactical missiles with warheads), 36 MK 13 MOD 0 canisters, section-level shipping containers, spare and repair parts, support equipment, training, technical assistance, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $63 million.
This sale will enhance the Spanish Navy’s ability to engage in coalition warfare with the U.S. Navy. The weapons will be carried on the Spanish Navy F-100 Class Frigates.
This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the military capabilities of Spain and furthering standardization and interoperability. It is important for Spain to maintain a strong self-defense capability.
Spain, which already has STANDARD missiles in its inventory, will have no difficulty absorbing these additional missiles. The sale of this equipment and support will not affect the basic military balance in the region.
Implementation of this sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government personnel or contractor representatives to Spain.
The prime contractor will be Raytheon Company, Tucson, AZ. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
This notice of a potential sale is required by law; it does not mean that the sale has been concluded.
