Singapore Ministry of Defence, The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) hosted a ship display by 22 warships at Changi Naval Base today, as part of the International Maritime Defence Exhibition (IMDEX) Asia 2007.
The warships were from Australia, Bangladesh, China, France, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen graced the opening ceremony of IMDEX Asia 2007 at Singapore Expo earlier this morning. Dr Ng and Minister of State for Defence Associate Professor Koo Tsai Kee also visited some of the foreign warships berthed at Changi Naval Base in the afternoon.
Some of the foreign warships on display at Changi Naval Base will be taking part in the 2nd Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS) Multilateral Sea Exercise. Besides the sea exercise, the RSN will also host the Multilateral Tactical Training Centre Exercise and Maritime Security Information Exchange Seminar. These events will develop professional capacity, enhance mutual understanding and strengthen interoperability among WPNS navies.
This is the sixth IMDEX Asia held in Singapore since its launch in 1997. A major international maritime defence show, IMDEX Asia is a biennial event which includes an exhibition and warship display. In conjunction with IMDEX Asia 2007, the RSN will also host the Naval Platform Technology Seminar (NPTS). The theme of this two-day seminar is “New Environment, New Technologies, New Capabilities”. More than 500 leading technologists, renowned academics and distinguished naval officers will attend the seminar.
