, The city of Cartagena said good-bye on 24 October to the 'Carrera' submarine and its crew, that left in the morning towards the port of Talcahuano in Chile, where will be arriving on 15 December, after sailing 8,500 miles.
This submarine, built by Navantia in the Cartagena shipyard is the second of the Scorpene class ordered by the Chilean Navy to the consortium Navantia-DCN.
During the farewell, the captain of the 'Carrera', Elio Corcuera, has assured that 'he is taking home the best conventional submarine in the world' and added that will provide the necessary dissuasion to get the peace. Besides, he has highlighted he is sad to leave Cartagena, as well as the entire crew that hold a banner on the submarine saying 'Thanks Cartagena'.
From Navantia, the Programme Manager has stated the innovation of this unit in propulsion and armament, and the importance of the event as a precedent for the construction of submarines.
This delivery ends the programme for the construction of two Scorpene submarines, 'O'Higgins' and 'Carrera' for the Chilean Navy. The first unit was floated, tested and commissioned in Cheburg (France) and the second, in Cartagena.
Navantia has now a solid submarines order book: two Scorpene for Malaysia and four S-80, a 100% Spanish design, for the Spanish Navy. Besides, Navantia will transfer technology and technical assistance to the Indian Navy for the construction of six Scorpene submarines.
