Saab will upgrade the Sea Giraffe 150 HC surveillance radar for the modernisation of the Canadian Navy’s Halifax Class frigates.
The contract has been signed with Lockheed Martin and has a value of approximately SEK 180 Million.
The agreement concerns the upgrade and modification of the existing Sea Giraffe 150 HC radar. Moreover, Saab will secure a high level of operational availability as well as new and improved functions for the radar in the years to come.
”We are very pleased that Lockheed Martin Canada and the Canadian Navy have selected Saab’s radar for this modernization program”, says Lennart Joelsson, Business Unit Manager, Saab Microwave Systems.
Local presence in Canada important
Saab has been providing radar to the Canadian Navy since the early nineties. On site in Canada is Saab Microwave Canada Ltd who will provide support services for the Canadian Navy. Saab Microwave Canada Ltd is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and will also support future Saab products in Canada. The local presence plays a vital role for a continuous close partnership with the Canadian Navy.
The intense upgrading and modification work will be made at Saab Microwave Systems Gothenburg, Sweden. Deliveries will be made continuously between 2010 and 2017.
Close partnership
The contract follows the six-year service contract for the support, repair and overhaul of the Canadian Navy’s Sea Giraffe 150 HC signed by Saab Microwave Canada Ltd January 2008.
Furthermore, in November last year, Saab and Lockheed Martin signed a contract for the design and development of command and control systems for twelve Halifax class frigates for the Canadian Navy.
The Saab Sea Giraffe 150 HC is a multi-role naval radar system featuring functions for air search, surface search and target designation in a single radar. It is installed in vessels of all sizes, from fast patrol craft up to frigates. Approximately 40 Saab Sea Giraffe 150 HC systems have been sold worldwide.
