VLADIVOSTOK, Russia: The breakdown of a fuel sensor on a nuclear submarine in far eastern Russia on Thursday set off alarm warnings but there has been no radiation leak, officials said.
“There has not been any leak from the nuclear submarines in Vilyuchinsk,” said a statement from the local emergency situations ministry in the remote Kamchatka peninsula where the submarine base is located.
“There has been information about a broken sensor on one of the submarines, the failure of which was the reason for the alarm. There is no danger to the population,” the statement said.
Inhabitants of the town, located close to the province's main city of Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky, which has a population of 200,000, were informed about the possible threat, ministry officials said.
There have been several incidents involving Russia's ageing fleet of nuclear submarines in recent years, including fatal explosions, fires, gas leaks and crashes.
