The Royal Saudi Navy took delivery April 3 of the Mecca, a French-built Lafayette S-3000-class frigate, according to a Saudi military source.
The handover ceremony at the French port of Toulon was attended by the commander of the Saudi Navy, Vice Adm. Prince Fahd Bin Abdullah Al-Saoud, the source said.
The Saudi Navy had ordered three Lafayette-class frigates from the French government in 1994 as part of the Sawari II project to bolster the Royal Saudi Navy. The first frigate, Al-Riyadh, was delivered in 2002. The ships are built by Paris-based DCN.
