wichita bizjournals, The U.S. Air Force will pay Raytheon Co. $7 million to upgrade the AN/GPN-22 air traffic control radar used at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City.
The radar provides air traffic controllers with information needed to guide aircraft on approach to a safe landing in all weather conditions.
The system was first deployed 20 years ago and is still in operation beyond its projected life cycle with no new systems either available or under development.
The contract calls for Raytheon to design, develop, test and produce upgraded replacements for the GPN-22 transmitters.
The work will be done in Long Beach, Sacramento and Chula Vista, Calif.
