HAIFA, Israel: Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd will release its Iron Dome defense system against short range artillery rockets at Eurosatory 2008 in Paris next week.
Iron Dome is a mobile defense solution for countering short range rockets and artillery shell threats. It is launched if a threat has been identified [and the] predicted intercept point (PIP) is within the predefined defended area.
The system was specially designed to avoid collateral damage by detonating the target warhead outside the defended area preventing target debris from falling in that area. The system’s main components include tracking radar, a battle management and weapons control unit, an interceptor with a special warhead that detonates threats from ranges up to 70 km, and a missile firing unit.
Iron Dome and the newly released David’s Sling represent a double-tiered missile defense solution. While Iron Dome will be used for missile defense against short range artillery rockets, David’s Sling, produced and developed by Rafael and Raytheon, will be used against medium and long range rockets, short range ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Both systems are in the development phase.
“Iron Dome has been selected by the Israeli Ministry of Defense for Israel’s critical air defense missions to protect populated areas in the northern and southern regions of the country”, says David Stemer, VP and General Manager of Rafael's Missiles and NCW Division. “Rafael accepted the challenge to deliver the Iron Dome system ready for deployment in the first quarter of 2010 as requested. We are confident that we will provide vital relief to the citizens of Israel against rocket attacks “.
