The air force has set up a panel to study whether buying Russian SU-30 fighter jets would fully serve the interests of both the armed forces and the government. Air force commander-in-chief Chalit Pukpasuk said the committee will thoroughly study the specifications for the procurement of the new fighters.
He stressed that the new jets must enable the air force to carry out its assigned missions.
''We have to weigh up the pros and cons of each type of fighter before making any purchase deals, especially in terms of the logistics support operations,'' ACM Chalit said.
He said F-18 fighter jets have all the necessary capacities to serve the air force's purposes. But the United States had yet to confirm that it would sell the jets. There were a lot of conditions and legal procedures involving approval by the US Congress, which would come first and foremost in any purchase deal.
