NorwayPost, Within the NATO defence alliance, only the US spends more on defence per inhabitant than Norway.
This is shown by fresh figures from the Department of Finance. It time to make some cuts, says the Socialist Left Party.
While the US spends the equivalent to NOK 9434 per inhabitant on defence, Norway comes second of the NATO members, with NOK 6440, nearly NOK 900 more than France, which comes third.
Of the other Nordic countries, Sweden and Denmark come as number 6 and 7, and spend NOK 2000 less per inhabitant than Norway, while the Finns spend only half of what Norwegian tax payers spend on defence.
-These figures clearly show that we ought to cut down on defence expenditures and rather use this money on creating jobs for the unemployed, says deputy leader of the Socialist Left Party, Oeystein Djupedal.
-I see no rational reason why Norway should spend more on defence per inhabitant than our allies, Djupedal says.
