SEOUL: North Korea called Friday for military talks with the United States under the auspices of the United Nations to discuss security matters on the Korean peninsula.
The proposal was contained in a statement issued by North Korea's military mission in the truce village of Panmunjom in the demilitarised zone, which bisects the peninsula.
North Korea's military proposes talks with its US counterpart, to be attended by a UN representative, said the statement carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency.
It said it was ready to hold such talks “in any place and at any time” to discuss “issues related to ensuring the peace and security” on the Korean peninsula.
“It is easy to miss a chance, but difficult to get it,” the statement said.
The three-year Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice but no peace treaty, leaving the peninsula technically at war.
During the war, US troops fought alongside South Korea under the UN flag.
