Saab AB, The first wind tunnel testing with Neuron carried out by Saab is currently in progress. The testing involves high speed testing and levels up to the speed of light are being tried out.
A Neuron model has been installed on a 1:16 scale in the wind tunnel belonging to the Forces Research Institute (FOI) in Stockholm. The first wind tunnel test with Neuron carried out by Saab took place recently. A high speed test has previously been carried out by Dassault.
“If this goes well, it is most definitely a milestone for the Neuron programme. It is the first time we have the right configuration and we will be flying at high speed. By doing this we hope to verify the outer frame. This is also an important step in order to reach the next phase of the programme”, says Mats Ohlson, acting programme manager for the Neuron programme.

The testing involves high speed trials and testing at levels up to the speed of light. The model is tested in the same conditions as the real aircraft will later be subject to. During the testing pressure is pumped into the wind tunnel. The test is carried out in order to verify that the aircraft can be controlled and steered inside the entire flight envelope. It is also about fulfilling the aircraft’s requirements with regards to air resistance and maximum air power at higher speeds.
At the same time as the high speed testing at FOI, low speed testing is being carried out in France.
