WASHINGTON: U.S. lawmakers will attempt to pass an amendment to the FY10 Defense Authorization Act that will protect the Navy’s multiyear acquisition of 124 F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and E/A-18G Growlers.
The act approved the original procurement plan, but, because contract negotiations were still under way, the Navy missed a March 1 deadline for announcing its intention to buy the aircraft. The Navy announced the multiyear deal on May 15, saying it would save the service $590 million through 2013.
Because the Navy missed the deadline, new legislation is required to approve the purchase. In a letter to lawmakers, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus urged that they pass an amendment by September 30 authorizing the deal.
The House is expected to consider the amendment on September 14, the day lawmakers return from their August recess, according to a Hill staff member. It could be sent to the Senate the following week. Staffers believe an amendment will make it to the president’s desk before the end of the fiscal year. Otherwise, the amendment could be included in a continuing resolution.
