Pakistan Develps air-burst A-P round

Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) has developed an air-burst anti-personnel round for the locally produced derivative of the Russian RPG-7, writes Doug Richardson. The new RPG-7AP has a warhead that contains 850 steel balls packed around a high-explosive charge.

It has a maximum range of 1,500 m and, according to the POF, is designed "to kill soldiers and damage equipment within 15 metres' radius".

In general configuration, it closely resembles the Type 69 40 mm air-burst anti-personnel grenade that China has developed for its Type 69-1 40 mm anti-tank grenade launcher. Like the Chinese round, it is propelled upwards by a jump mechanism when it strikes the ground. Once it reaches a height of about 2 m, the warhead detonates, scattering its steel balls.

The main difference between the Pakistani and Chinese rounds is that the muzzle velocity of the former is 95 m/s, slightly lower than the 102 m/s of its Chinese equivalent. Projectile weight is slightly higher - 2.85 kg rather than 2.8 kg - while the payload contains 850 steel balls rather than about 800.

Although the POF cites a calibre of 40 mm compared with the 75 mm of the Chinese round, in practice the Pakistani figure refers to the calibre of the launcher rather than the diameter of the warhead. The latter is about 75-80 mm in diameter.

I doubt that India is also developing this kind of weapon.
I dont know why dont Paksitan Army equip its personals with high tech guns i think these rifiles have no use in this modern time.I have read a news that India has developed Sathi with which a personal can communicate to the headquarter and can give information to its officers in controls.
Pakistan do have a bullet proof Jacket and a bullet proof halmet made of composites which is light weight.I will post the information later when i will get time.

Pakistan should be exporting items, such as the helmets and vests, all around the world. I am sure the items would be very competitive all around the world., particularly in the public domain. Any idea of how these items are presently being marketed and who are they being marketed by? I think the overall marketing of Pakistani military hardware has a lot of improvements to undergo.

If the air burst RPG is effective then there should be good potential for export of this particular item in the developing world. Latin America and the Middle East is an excellent market for this product.

Kashif do you know if all the personals in the Pakistani army are being equiped with these protective gear or only some like SSG. I think so far i have only seen some pictures of soldiers in WANA wearing these but not all of them. And i think that Pakistan should first equip all the personals with it like US army and Canadian forces before start to export these. Hussain do you have any countries in sight which might be intersted in buying these.

U.S. moves to sell howitzers to Pakistan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration said on Friday it tentatively planned to let Pakistan buy 115 155mm self-propelled howitzer artillery pieces as well as related gear and services valued at up to $56 million.
The sale of M109A5 howitzers would not affect the basic military balance in the region, the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a notice to Congress.
The big guns at issue are in the U.S. Army's current inventory, said Jose Ibarra, an agency spokesman. The total value of the deal, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $56 million, the notice to Congress said.
Such notice is required by law. Congress has the power to block such a government-to-government arms sale but has never done so. No contractor would be involved in the deal.
Pakistan currently operates an earlier-generation self-propelled howitzer, the M109A2. It would use the newer model to re-equip existing units and retire older artillery pieces, the Pentagon said.
The sale would help Pakistan enhance "internal command and control of the mountain range bordering its country," the notice said.
It said a U.S. technical assistance team and a U.S. government quality assurance team would spend a year to check out the howitzers. In addition, a U.S. technical assistance team would take part in "program management and technical reviews" twice annually for two weeks at a time, the Pentagon said.

Wouldent be surprised if the PA decides to upgrade the M109A5 SP to more modern M109A6 SP howitzer (Paladin), which can be done realatively easily.

A word about Paladin:
The Paladin provides a revolutionary advance in performance, responsiveness and survivability. Able to operate independently, it has a firing range up to 30 km with the standard M284 39-caliber 155mm main armament. From the move, the M109A6 Paladin can receive a fire mission, compute firing data, select and take up firing positions, automatically unlock and point its cannon, fire the first round in under 60 seconds and move - day or night. This "shoot and scoot" capability not only significantly improves responsiveness to calls for fire, it also protects the vehicle and crew from counter battery fire - significantly improving survivability.

I agree with Aditya. Pakistan would better of acquiring the T-6-52 calibre turret from South Africa. The good thing about this turret is that South africa carried out extensive tests of the feasibility of retroffitting a T-72 chasis with the T-6-52 turret. The combination proved to be very effective.

Pakistani Army is producing the MBT-2000 and the chasis is in the T-72/T-80 class. There I think it is entirely possible to retrofit this turret to the chasis of MBT-2000. It also provides the added advantage of a common platform.

bofors truck mounted self propelled howitzer has a range of 1000 kms in any terrain.
also the bofors field howitzer is the only gun in the world which has an auxillary power unit enabling it to enter /exit a combat zone autonomously .
but what do you think about the denel t6?

The measure of success of any military hard ware is their performace in conflicts and here t6 has nthing to show for whle the M109 series has a long and very very waried experience in diff conflict zones around the world. Along with this the PA has extensive experience in the use of the M109 series, so they save a lot of money time n energy in employin somthing for which the infrastructure already exists. Plus as PA is also due to induct the chinese PLZ45 series of SPH so they have more than enough to counter the threat posed from IA.

Another very intresting development is that the PA is in the final stages to buy 730 M113 from the swiss at a very reasonable amount, this is really good news as all of the APC should be here in a very short time after the conclusion of the agreement. INSHALLAH.

First Sikh join Pak Army

LAHORE, Dec 19: Sardar Harcharan Singh became the first Pakistani-born Sikh since 1947 to join the 116th Long Course as a cadet at the Pakistan Military Academy.

He reported for training at the academy last week. Christians and Hindus have already been in the civil, judicial and military services of Pakistan, however no Sikh ever applied for Army commission over the past 58 years.

Born to a lower-middle class family of Nankana Sahib, Harcharan is the son of the late Sardar Aya Singh, a local cloth trader. He died 11 years back leaving behind a widow and five children, Harcharan being the second last among his three daughters and two sons.

Harcharan was determined to do something different from other Sikhs. Since his childhood, he has been a good student and the credit goes to his mother, Mrs Ameer Kaur, who is the main source of encouragement for him.

Talking to The News, before joining the academy, Harcharan said: "I had a dream which comes true, and now I have been selected for the Army. I am standing here due to my mother’s efforts that is always a sources of inspiration for me and helped me reach the height in my academic carrier.

"I did matric from Govt Guru Nanka School, Nankana Sahib, with distinction and got 677 marks. I did intermediate from FC College in Pre-Engineering with 726 marks. I wanted to be in the armed forces since it is the most challenging job in the country. One really feels proud while wearing a uniform and same is the case with me. I am selected purely on merit. I was selected in National College of Arts for Architecture Department but after I got call from army, I was on top of the world."

He said: "My aim of joining the army is to serve the country like other communities. I was surprised to notice that no Sikh ever joined army as a regular officer. It was my effort during entire academic career that I should be the need of an institution and note vice versa."

"I am thankful to Veer Gee after my mother, who always encouraged me to study more and do something different from others, who are roaming in the bazaars of Nankana Sahib." Harcharan was number four in his family but elder in male members as his three elder sisters were married and living happily. His younger brother Sardar Surrinder Singh, a matric student, too wants to join the armed forces.

I think this would further the cause of "Unity in Diversity" in Pakistan-specific paradigm.

fOR YOUR INFORMATION THEY ARE NOT NEW M113'S but they are used M113's from swedish army. Swedes are auctioning there used M113's and going for new IFV's.

Perhaps, owing to economise the budget!!!
Secondly, the concentration would be on air combat in any future would-be war, as evident from the experiences of Gulf/ Afghanistan war. So no need to invest heavily in these sort of things.
