China is claiming a new search and fire control radar that can counter the F-22. It is described as a practical meter wave sparse array synthetic impulse and aperture radar. Surprised they didn't add Quantum in the description.

Michael Peck? Thoroughly reputable source. Read a few more of his articles for a little background and a primer on how to write a clickbait article for fun and profit.

I did not even get that far. I saw it was the National Interest and promptly lose my own. I have come across too many inaccurate and/or alarmist articles to bother with that site anymore.

More on the upgraded T55 engine for Chinook: Honeywell's T55 Engine Upgrade To Provide More Power, Better Fuel Efficiency For U.S. Army's CH-47 Chinook

Sounds like this is almost ready for primetime, and these benefits can be had either through retrofit or new build, with no airframe modification. My only question would be can the existing transmission absorb an additional 20% power, or would it need to be upgraded? This statement seems to infer no change would be required: "The new T55 updates do not require changes to the helicopter engine mount or engine interfaces...."

GE is also proposing its 408 Turboshaft (same unit used in latest CH53). The army currently has no budget for this, both Honeywell and GE are using their own money for prototypes.

I came across this article recently on the Dutch experience with the NH90 NFH. It is hosted on NHI's website so its not entirely impartial, but they talk quite openly about some of the problems they've had with it, and how they're mostly a thing of the past.

There is some talk at the end about mid-life upgrade plans. Apparently the Norwegians have already tested the Naval Strike Missile on the platform, and the dutch are planning to incorporate a newer torpedo in the next few years. There are also apparently still some problems with the HF antennae, and they want to improve its FLIR and long distance communications capability.

Seems like the clear choice for NZ's Seasprite replacement at the moment.

NHI have outlined an upgrade pathway for the NH90. It is working on a "step 2" software upgrade which will be retrofitted to existing aircraft, plus it is working on a "step 3" software upgrade as well. It is also continuing to retrofit about 140 helos, that were originally built to IOC, to the latest configuration. There is a MLU planned at some stage.

The Embraer KC-390 has been renamed the Boeing Embraer C-390 Millennium. Boeing Embraer – Defense will sell the A2A refuelling variant as the KC-390. The Boeing Embraer – Defense joint venture has received approve from US & Japanese regulators and is awaiting approval from the EU regulator. Millennium, not a very inspirational name and as the guys on the Aviation Week podcast said, not a name one would have for an aircraft that is the competitor for the C-130.

The AIM-154 JSOW is to be certified for the F-35A by the end of this month.

The civvy variant of the C-130J, the LM100J has gained FAA civil certification.

RAF is to use the Typhoon as a testbed for Tempest technologies. For those unaware of the historical connection of the names, the original Typhoon was the Hawker Typhoon from WW2 armed with 4 x 20 mm cannon and 8 x 60 lb rockets. It was powered by the Napier Sabre 24 cylinder engine which was 2 12 cylinder V12 engines bolted together. It was a very problematic engine. The Hawker Tempest was the upgraded Typhoon and both aircraft were devastating ground attack aircraft, as well as excellent fighters.

UAE has signed US$2 billion in contracts for their Mirage 2000 upgrades.

Germany and France have agreed to a FCAS demonstrator jet for 2026. Seems pretty ambitious but competitive pressure from the Tempest program will no doubt speed things up. The same applies to Tempest assuming Brexit doesn’t ruin the UK’s economy. RR may have more expertise in military jet engine technology but they have some significant cash outlays for fixing Trent fan blades.

A French Cougar helicopter and Tiger helicopter had a mid-air collision in Northern Mali on Monday. This was during operations against militant jihadis, and resulted in the deaths of all 13 military personnel on board both aircraft. They were in pursuit of the jihadis when the collision occurred.

Saab flies first series-production Gripen E for Sweden | Jane's 360

First production Gripen E conducted it's first flight, according to SAAB official statement. I like this Fighter personally, and SAAB are fighting hard to sell Gripen to South East Asia with the eyes on Indonesian and Philippines market after it's sole success do far with Thailand in region.

However facing F-16V and LM marketing packages plus US political and commercial cloud will be very hard for Gripen chances in Indonesia market. Thus I only see their hope left with Philippines in the region (unless Thai's decided to follow through on more Gripen).
They need more volume, getting 60 from Sweden and 36 so far from Brazil for Gripen NG will be very hard to keep competitive and provide efficient value chain in the future.

According to this article the Trump administration is pressuring Japan to choose LM over BAE for its future jet development program. Not offering the F-22 to Japan may come back to bite US military aviation in the a$$. Had the F-22 been made available, it is likely the USAF would have been able to purchase more jets. The resulting combined US/Japan Raptor fleet in the western Pacific would have made a strong deterrent. This would have given the US the lead in a future Japanese jet. Dealing with a keen partner seems preferable to dealing with Trump.

The F-22 was rendered unavailable by law, which would have required a Presidential veto in order to prevent. GotD policy did not get involved.

The Saab 39 has a range and weaponload much less than the F-16 or Su-30/35, besides that Indonesia already operates the F-16 and Sukhois, so i dont expect Indonesia will choose the Gripen.

But it can be te perfect multirole fighter for the Philippines. Quite economical in acquisition and operation and it uses the same engine as the FA-50.
