I'd be a little suprised if the TAS door is large enough for Merlin, it always looked a little small, but there is loads of room inside and if it was purely a matter of storage there's room for at least 2 or 3 Lynx sized aircraft in there.

The flight deck was marked out with a single spot. I don't know what Australia's FLYCO doctrine is, but without FLYCO being fitted out (the compartment is there, but empty) the RFA Bays are restricted to a single spot.

Sort of ironic that by the time Choules arrives in Sydney, the Sea Kings will be retired and the MRH-90's still under review!!

If there was a need to deploy Choules, eg for a natural disaster, early in her time here, probably mean the Blackhawks will have to be used.

Is that such a great problem? Blackhawks have been deploying aboard Kanimbla and Manoora for years and on Humanitarian missions for years too.

I'm sure once they conduct a quick bit of testing Choules will be right to operate a couple of Blackhawks.

The MRH-90's may finish their review soon too. Who knows? Not I...

Apparently an announcement will soon be forthcoming on the decision of whether the DMO is going to green light the mid-life update of the seven remaining ANZAC class frigates for an ASMD upgrade as per HMAS Perth. After successful sea trials, a number of contracting models were being put forward to how many ships would undergo the upgrade and when. Rumours are that it could be a complete class upgrade, ie all ships. If this is the case this will be a major boost to the self defence capability of these RAN workhorses, as well as a significant technology refresher for the fleet. The modifications done under the ASMD upgrade are much more than just the fitting of CEAFAR and CEAMOUNT.

A small correction, DMO doesn't greenlight anything, they act as the project manager for the capability owner and sponsor - and they act at the direction of them after the minister or central agencies gives their blessing.

Unlikely, but as Kanimbla and Manoora EACH had 2x 25mm Typhoon guns, 1x 20mm Phalanx CIWS and 2x 12.7mm Mini-Typhoon guns, I'm pretty sure we can scrape up a few gats for Choules...

Probably doesn't have any armament at the present moment other than small arms. RFA Largs Bay wasn't heavily armed. From Wiki:
Armament:
• 2 × 7.62mm Mk.44 Miniguns
• 6 × 7.62mm L7 GPMGs
Fitted to receive :
• Phalanx CIWS
• 30 mm DS30B cannon

Australia will most likely fit her with armament from the Kanimbla and Manoora.

I suspect Australia may fit her with a 25mm Typhoon chain gun or two too... We will know before long what she will normally be fitted with...

Cool youve read it too.....very informaive and according to people I know who were on the project during the build pretty accurate as well.

I found the info relating to the combat system very informative.
