Wanting To Join The ADF

hey!

About 3 months ago i applyed for a postion in the ADF as a Electrician, i then went to my JOSE day. unfortunitly i didnt get high enoughf marks on the Tech Tests and wasnt able to continue. they offerd me other roles like Builder, Plumber, Fitter and Turner ect ect.

I had already decided long ago that i wanted to become an electrician because i had already completed 4 weeks work experiance with 2 different Electrical Companys.

So i turned them down and they shut my file. Now im not aloud to re apply and sit the tests again for another 12 months.

Im currently studdying Year 11. For the last 2 months now i have been doing some seriouse thinking about the career i want in the near future. I am starting to think that maybe i will join as a rifleman instead, i sort of belive that this is the job i am best suited for (you couldnt get me away from army stuff when i was a pup). But my parents/Friends have always steered me away from doing any job that envolves Combat.

I also have always been very interested and keen to Serve my Country of australia and the lives it holds.

What i am wondering is:

Whats it like being a Rifleman in the Australian Army (over seas members are welcome to give their input as well)

Should i complete a trade Before joining so i have something to fall back on

Are you happy you have joined? and are you planning on staying in the ADF?

How high up the ranks can a rifleman get? and how much can he earn if ranked high?

any and all info/support would be great. thankyou

I would advise you finish year 12. It will open up a lot of choices you may not have thought you would be interested in. I intend to finish year 12 and then pick out a job from the ADF. Even if it is general entry, finish year 12 will show them you don't quit half way through doing something.

There are officer ranks and then there are lower ranks. Through general entry, you can attain the ranks below 2lt. So from private through to regimental sergeant major of the army. Officer ranks range from 2lt to general.

Somewhere on one of the military sites there should be a file which tells you rate of pay per rank. But the lowest you can get paid in the army is around 45k before tax. You add in the costs you will not have(food and rent) then you save a lot. Most of rent and food is paid for by the army, leaving you a tiny fraction compared to what civies pay. There's also a lot of other benefits like being able to use the facilities and free dental and medical.

Just look up "further information" on electrician at www.defencejobs.gov.au and there should be a lot of information there.

Yeh I would definately finish year 12, as for joining as a rifleman I would reconsider re-applying for the electrition position and put rifleman as your second or third preference. I myself applied for clearance diver and rifleman over 12 months ago, and successfully passed everything, and was due to leave last wk. But after waiting so long I pulled out a week before leaving and decided to go back to uni.

Definatley stick it out through year 12! I thought seriously about enlistment when I was in year 11, went through the whole process and at the end of it they actually told me to do year 12 because of the options it would open up for me.

Now they are paying me to study at uni here in Adelaide with a clear run in as an undergraduate officer. Uni really does nothing for me personally, besides the girls, but hey... no pain no gain :)

JBAC/ATC Officer

Hi Guys,

I'm up for the Assessment Day for my application as a JBAC (formally ATC Officer) in a couple of weeks. I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on the specific application process for this position and anything in particular I should be aware of walking into it.

Also, if there is someone currently enlisted/serving as an ATC Officer I would love to have a proper chat regarding the recruitment process, as well as the position and lifestyle.

:dance

Other than that, the usual crap about the job opportunities in ADF, varied career paths, opportunity to help the Australian community, opportunities to travel etc, etc.
