US military exports to Asia: Critical or not?

There has been a lot of talk in recent weeks about the importance of US military sales to Asia. The question is how "critical" the sales will be to peace in the region moving forward. According to General North (Commander PACAF), they are incredibly important because they achieve two things at once: modernization and interoperability. However, there are indigenous programs also underway in the region as well as alternative suppliers. How important do you think US partner/ally reliance on American military exports (ex. F-35; AWACS; etc.) is to long-term peace and stability in the region?
