US for joint naval facility in Kochi
20 January 2005: The US has proposed a joint naval communication centre in Kochi to monitor terrorist activities from the Persian Gulf all the way to the South China Sea, including the Indian Ocean and the busy sealanes of the Malacca Strait.
This proposal was first hinted at during US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s visit late last year, and this could be taken up anew when the secretary of state, Condoleeza Rice, visits India likely in June. While the political leadership is chary about a joint facility with the US, the Indian Navy appears keen because of the vast communication advances of the American maritime forces.
Britain was keen to set up a joint special forces training centre in Kochi but permission was not given.
