US develops 14-ton super bomb, bigger than Russian vacuum bomb
RIA Novosti | Sep 14, 2007

WASHINGTON: The U.S. has a 14-ton super bomb more destructive than the vacuum bomb just tested by Russia, a U.S. general said Wednesday.

The statement was made by retired Lt. General McInerney, chairman of the Iran Policy Committee, and former Assistant Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

McInerney said the U.S. has "a new massive ordnance penetrator that's 30,000 pounds, that really penetrates ... Ahmadinejad has nothing in Iran that we can't penetrate."

He also said the new Russian bomb was not a "penetrator."

On Tuesday, the Fox News television channel said: "A recent decision by German officials to withhold support for any new sanctions against Iran has pushed a broad spectrum of officials in Washington to develop potential scenarios for a military attack on the Islamic regime.".

Commenting on the report, McInerney said: "Since Germany has backed out of helping economically, we do not have any other choice. ... They've forced us into the military option."

McInerney described some possible military campaign scenarios and said: "The one I favor the most, of course, is an air campaign," he continued.

He said that bombing would be launched by 65-70 stealth bombers and 400 bombers of other types.

"Forty-eight hours duration, hitting 2500 aimed points to take out their [Iranian] nuclear facilities, their air defense facilities, their air force, their navy, their Shahab-3 retaliatory missiles, and finally their command and control. And then let the Iranian people take their country back," the general said describing the campaign, adding it would be "easy."

McInerney is well-known among the U.S. conservatives. He is the chairman of the Iran Policy Committee co-chaired by James Woolsey, former CIA director, William A. Nitze, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Richard Schifter, former Assistant Secretary of State, and Professor Raymond Tanter, former Personal Representative of the Secretary of Defense to arms control talks in Europe.

The McInerney statement was made following a Fox News report that U.S. "officials are making plans to attack Iran as early as next summer," since Washington believes diplomatic efforts have failed.

-Here's a pic and little snippet about the MOP.

-In one project, the U.S. Air Force intends to integrate a new 30,000-pound bomb that could destroy deeply-buried military targets in Iran.

Under the $2.5 million program, the new Massive Ordnance Penetrator, developed by Boeing, would be integrated on the B-2 stealth bomber. MOP was described as a GPS-guided weapon that contains more than 5,300 pounds of conventional explosives inside a 20.5-foot long enclosure of hardened steel.

The russian bomb is equivalent to 44 metric tons vs the 11 tons for the US bomb. Of course if they are factoring in where its supposedly going then I guess the US bomb is more destructive. Sounds more like fancy use of semantics.

Not just the timing ...

McInerney said the U.S. has "a new massive ordnance penetrator that's 30,000 pounds, that really penetrates ... Ahmadinejad has nothing in Iran that we can't penetrate."
Let's just... laugh about the naivety of that last part, k?

He also said the new Russian bomb was not a "penetrator."
And penetrators are superior in general, how?

On Tuesday, the Fox News television channel said: "A recent decision by German officials to withhold support for any new sanctions against Iran has pushed a broad spectrum of officials in Washington to develop potential scenarios for a military attack on the Islamic regime.".

Commenting on the report, McInerney said: "Since Germany has backed out of helping economically, we do not have any other choice. ... They've forced us into the military option."
Now that deserves a real "wtf".

The most recent decision by Germany with regards to sanctions was to cut off any military supply and dual-use goods. Get the US to reimburse us for 10 billion dollars worth in exports per year, and we'll stop the civilian stuff?

He said that bombing would be launched by 65-70 stealth bombers and 400 bombers of other types.
... just a pity for that plan that the US doesn't have that many bombers - of either type.

And then let the Iranian people take their country back
... right. That strategy works so well. :eek:nfloorl:

kato...

Its fox news bud what do you expect??? Ballanced reporting? :eek:nfloorl:

Anyways, the Vacumb bomb is a therobearic explosive, this is a penatrator. They are two different types of weapons so they shouldnt be compared. Penitrators are not better, they are better at penitrating hardend structures, thermobearic explosives are better at inflicting area damage on drag sensitive targets. The vacumb bomb should be compared to MOAB (Massive Ordinance Air Blast) which is a similar, thermobaric weapon.

And the americans do have the ability to hit any underground structure in iran without our new "tall boy":

Awww. I'd say the American device must be superior. It's bigger, with better aim and penetrates much better. Clearly it will have the most effect on the target, whereas the Russian bomb is a public admission of impotence...

It's almost as surreal as a movie I once saw...

12 inch appendages as opposed to 18 inch appendages

The Russian bomb weighs c. 10 tons with a TNT equiv. of 44 tons.
actually, if we are going to talk about my bomb being bigger then your bomb, if you really want to make a big bomb you just take any tanker car carrying fuel, empty it out and you can get yields up to 1 ton per cubic meter of space. Its called a BLEVE, and they are every fireman's worst nightmare (Iranian or American, or even German or Danish even)..Which kind of makes this all a bit silly.

If you really want to be nasty you take a tanker of 300000 DWT and turn that into a 300K one-flash-and-you're-ash beasty. But trouble is that you can see a 300K ship coming and rail cars are kind of noisey.

oh, here is a good plan get MacGiver to HALO into Iran and then park a train in underground nuclear facility of your choice, and then set it off with a tooth brush or something, while escaping with the cute nuclear physicist (or am I getting my movies mixed up?).

cheers

Hm i dont think you got the whole argument of thermobaric vs penetrator.

I think I did. I responded to kato's suggestion of a Freudian layer to what the US general said. In that context a penetrator beats a surface blast. ;)

The movie I talked about is called:

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

One could, for fun, compare the quotes of General Buck Turgidson and General Jack D. Ripper from that movie with:

The statement was made by retired Lt. General McInerney, chairman of the Iran Policy Committee, and former Assistant Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

McInerney said the U.S. has "a new massive ordnance penetrator that's 30,000 pounds, that really penetrates ... Ahmadinejad has nothing in Iran that we can't penetrate."

Hence my veiled amusement.

But nuff of that I think.

Vccume Bomb!!!!

Russia claims to have made the Father of all bombs!!!

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has tested the world's most powerful vacuum bomb, which unleashes a destructive shockwave with the power of a nuclear blast, the military said on Tuesday, dubbing it the "father of all bombs".

The bomb is the latest in a series of new Russian weapons and policy moves as President Vladimir Putin tries to reassert Moscow's role on the international stage.

"Test results of the new airborne weapon have shown that its efficiency and power is commensurate with a nuclear weapon," Alexander Rukshin, Russian deputy armed forces chief of staff, told Russia's state ORT First Channel television. The same report was later shown on the state-sponsored Vesti channel.

"You will now see it in action, the bomb which has no match in the world is being tested at a military site."

It showed a Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bomber dropping the bomb over a testing ground. A large explosion followed.

Pictures showed what looked like a flattened multi-storey block of flats surrounded by scorched soil and boulders. "The soil looks like a lunar landscape," the report said.

"The defense ministry stresses this military invention does not contradict a single international treaty. Russia is not unleashing a new arms race."

Such devices generally detonate in two stages. First a small blast disperses a main load of explosive material into a cloud, which then either spontaneously ignites in air or is set off by a second charge

This is a bit old ,
its basicaly 2 stage , first its a small explosion which disperses as a cloud and is then ignited by a second explosion which generates a big pressure wave that is much more powerfull than a conventional blast and also generates vacuum , the shockwave aswell as high temperature basicaly completly anhilates every living creature in that area

Yes, they are 2 different types of bombs.
The Russian bomb--"Father of all Bombs"(FOB)-- is an oversized fuel/oxygen guzzler (which also does the above). It could have been put to good use in the early Tora Bora days. Although, I'm not sure how close allied forces could get to it. Perhaps, someone with the freakish Lung capacity of Lance Armstrong could have been a forward air controller;). AFAIK, it, built to wipe out "things" residing above earth.

The MOP, as noted, is built to do the opposite; wipe out things below earth.
Perhaps, if a B2 used a MOP and MOAB (a bit delayed fuse... wouldn't want to eliminate the MOP... or drop them in the opposite order) a lot could be taken care of...;)

BTW: does that link to the MOP work for you (collective)? It did when I posted it, now I get the Boeing site (where "you" can type in MOP):unknown

I'll also try to find the original "article" where FOX News and Friends, made not so new news, FOX NEWS.

:eek:fftopic GD: I love your Humor. I'm just guessing, but along with Dr. Strangelove, do you keep an eye out for "Kato";)? If you had to give up ever watching The Pink Panther or Strangelove, which one would it be (Again, I'm just guessing about the "Inspector.") Both are 2 of my favorites!
