The world is a smaller place

http://earth.google.com/ Who would have thought such an app would ever be available to the general public? And for free! The imagery is resolved small enough to where one could plan a military op with it. Frankly I'm a little appalled our enemies can so easily access such information.

On the other hand Ive been able to visit all the bases Ive been to, places Ive been, areas Ive hunted and fished....ect While not in real time, and some of the imagery a few years old, or, a little hazy, Ive had no problem ID'ing aircraft, ships, WMD sights, and the easiest of things to find are air fields. For instance at Pearl Harbor I saw some Spruance DDs being stripped and an Iowa class at berth "is that the IOWA we keep there"? It kinda blew me away seeing all the changes at the military bases Ive been to.

Its a cool app most of all for the strategy minded. I just spent the last hour looking for missile bases and air bases in Iran and Syria.

If you dont already have it then enjoy.

Rich can you tell me how to post a topic ? cause I need information about the Canadian Armed Forces for my school speech on January.

Mod edit: Simply click on the forums button above, when ALL the forums are available, choose one (probably "general military defence" and when it opens a new button appears called "new thread". Click this and away you go. Now, back on topic...

I assumed the reason is because civilian Sats are used and it would be logistically impossible to provide up to date coverage. Google Earth itself admits the imagery is being constantly updated as data becomes available. Also used is data from air craft so it isnt just civilian satellites used for data sources. No matter how they do it, or how old the data is, its still fascinating to use an Intel source that a few years ago only very few people had access to. All of them being in the military Intel community.

Francis I'm afraid I dont understand your question. What do you mean, "post a topic"?

The imagery is by no means up to date. You can't see military restricted areas as they are hazed out. Everything available is public knowledge so there is no need to be appalled. ;)

I saw Area-51 clearly. I saw an Ohio class tied up to dock at Bangor Washington. I saw every special facility I'd ever been to as well as ever over-seas , and stateside base, I'd ever served at. I was able to find Syrian Scud bases, Egyptian chemical weapons installations, Iranian reactors, highways used as landing strips by the Libyan air force, B-52s and B-1bs on aprons, Minuteman silos, the Arizona bone yard, SAC museum. Heck I even found the gas stations I hang out in on midnight shift .

When you get a spot with good resolve you can even see people. True a good bit is poor imagery, sadly much of Russia is. But much of the MidEast is very good imagery. Military installations are fairly easy to find and their use is also fairly easy to figure out. Until I stumbled upon this I really had no idea such information was available to the general publ

Its kinda tripped out. Especially for those of us old enough to remember when all this was TS with a big "S"!

Did you check the closed military districts in Russia or China? Everything that governments don't want google earth to see are hazed out. With the freedom of information act all the US info you see is well known. Area 51 has been observed by satalite for decades now, they now when it's coming. The US has always been more militarily transparent than other countries. It is a fun little toy for us amateur CIA analysist types but you can rest assured our enemy already has any info they can muster together from google earth.

Yes, I know what our capabilities are, or at least have some idea. And they are far less "capability" then many people think. I always get a laugh when I hear folks say, many of whom are foreigners, some variation of, "American can find Osama any time they want with their satellites".:eek:nfloorl: As if a satellite can find an individual and then hover over a spot on the earth and track him. Try as hard as I can I can never convince these people such an assertion is ridiculous.

So I dont know why regions of Russia have poor imagery. I doubt it has anything to do with government and suspect much of google earth imagery is furnished by aircraft. There are strips of China in high resolution and Ive had no problem find their air bases. I also had no problem zero'ing in on their South Fleet HQ and the DDs they have at anchorage there.

So it is good fun.

I found the earth forum and they are taking me all over the place. Right now Im checking out the Kiel naval base. I spent all that time finding Minuteman silos when someone in the google earth community had already located and catalogued every silo we ever built.

Don't look onto my balcony when spying on Kiel. :D

The photos of the naval base are not that interesting but there are two Israeli subs to be seen of you look at HDW and one U209 in a dry dock right next to HDW.

The first ones I found. Am I right it was their color that tipped me off? Also in Sand Diego harbor is a Wasp class. #6 would make it the Bonhomme Richard.
