malaysian air force main transport/utility helis are sikorsky S61. all are reaching 30 years old. they are urgent to get new transport helis.

air force trend of purchasing is leaning towards ex USSR made aircraft including Mig29 and SU30MKM. expected they are buying Mi-17.

is Mi -17 good helis? Mi-17 got variant specifically for CSAR or not?

what other transport helis should air force get?

Chinook might be too big for what they need. Australia has just done a deal with Eurocopter for the NH-90, this aircraft will become our new medium lift helo, capable of carrying 20 soldiers in full kit. We will operate this helo, along with our BlackHawkes and Chinooks.

cootamundra..

i think u are right. malaysian armed force need medium utility helis with CSAR capability like EH101,NH90, Cougar, black hawk or Mi-17. chinook is too big.

if not mistaken, the government already purchased about 10 mi-17...but dont know the helis are for police air wing or military air force.

Hi, I've just join this forum. Well here's my two cents worth. Malaysia really need to replace those aging S61. However money is always the issue block. It would be nice if Malaysia could acquire NH90 or EH101 which are just about the right size heli but Mi-17 but be the more realistic target as of now. Chinook is usefull but maybe at a later stage when we have sufficient medium lift heli on ground.
