I understand what defines the generation of a fighter, but what determines the generation of a tank and whixh tanks are in which generations?

Good question:

I have no idea:p:

Seriously, I go by procurement cycles of known technological savvy countries, which looks a little complicated when you first look at it, but makes sense when you apply a nation's history to that method.

E.g. Australia is just going through a procurement cycle where they bought a batch of M1A1 AIM tanks.

It follows that this batch of AIM tanks will be the latest generation for that flavor of M1A1 MBT.

The Challenger 2, Leclerc, M1A2, latest Swedish and Spainish Leos and Merkava 4 would also be at that level ... Russia (??)

In a lot of ways, I think the M1A2 stream is beginning to look like a mistake and you'll probably find an "M1A3" (if its ever procured) brings lessons learned from the two paths (M1A1 AIM and M1A2) back into a common platform design again.

Just my 2 cents

Cheers
