The truth is, that the best laid plans come to naught, in military conflicts, because of the fault of presumption. Alexander, gambled everyday, since he left Macedonia, that he had a free hand to deploy his troops as he wished. He was living on a prayer. Why? because of the ignominious end to his period of expansion and military conflicts. Wars are planned for, but how are they executed? How many batteries of artillery, how many formations of infantry, how many squadrons of tanks are enough? If one has a great enough number, one could have the misfortune of firing on one's own troops. The unit on the field of battle, has to be confident, about his presence there, and has to have the presence of mind, in battle. Battles could be won, by merely assassinating all the opposing Generals and spreading panic, among the troops. Infantry is the most valuable asset, because they are flexible. similarly, each arm of the Force, is important. Rommel did not use his tanks to a great extent. He pulverized the opposing tanks with artillery, and then asked his tanks to join the party, to great numerical advantage. His mechanized infantry formations then took over. If grit is shown in the field of battle, even in stalling the enemy, at all cost, in the long run, victory is inevitable.
