Submerged Acoustic / Noise Generator

Friends,
My research shows that some submarines of the world use noise generators to increase their sound signature, at various frequencies.

Can anyone provide insight into these systems?

Cheers!

Why would any sub want to do that? It's a death knell.:shudder
When someone is recording your signatures for analysis and classification during peacetime, this is exactly what you would want to do...

Or would you?

What you do is not become a target... if your being tracked chances are your not going to know it until they already have your accoustic signature.

Are you a submariner?

This technique is used more on the SSK side, and really doesn't apply to SSBN .

Look at my profile.

The only reason I can think of is to try to confuse an enemy once they have acquired you. Is she a quiet Akula II or a noisy Han? Thats the only thing I can think of. I doubt if they would use it to mask their boats accoustics for intelligence purposes b/c they would have to run it 24/7 defeating the purpose of being quiet.

"noisemakers" sometimes get used for training missions

I think the only thing that could be achieved is to heighten the enemy's level of suspicion and alertness.

If I'm an SSK, a boomer, or an SSN, I want nothing more than to be the only truely quiet place in the ocean. If the game is hide and seek, one doesn't loudly attempt to sound and appear as someone else- one seeks to be completely invisible and silent.

You can't kill what you can't detect.
